The Pros and Cons of a Swimming Pool Cover

Swimming pool covers may seem like an innovative idea to help keep dirt and debris out of your swimming pool but have you ever considered the downfall to using a tarp or cover?

Advantages

Before we get into the disadvantages, it is only fair to look at a few advantages of a swimming pool cover. Covers do help keep dirt and debris out of the pool and can also keep the sunlight out which helps with water evaporation in warmer temperatures.

A cover can also help you see a reduced consumption of chlorine and other chemicals you use in the pool because it is reducing the amount of UV rays that hit the pool. Also, there may be fewer instances of flow blockages because leaves will land on the cover rather than the pool which means the skimmer will not get clogged when the leaves are removed.

Disadvantages

Tarps and other swimming pool covers may not be aesthetically pleasing which may not seem like a big deal breaker, but when you are looking to create a vacation oasis in your backyard, you do not want an unsightly cover to take away from your dream.

Pool covers are also a lot of work and can be hard to remove which takes away any spontaneity out of a quick dip in the pool. Before getting into the pool, you will have to remove the heavy cover and then replace it when you are finished.

If you have an irregularly shaped pool such as a kidney shape or curved pool, then a pool cover may not even fit, and a rolled cover may not even be an option due to the unusual shape of the pool.

If you use salt water, then you can also see an increase in salt consumption and other nonchlorine chemicals you may use. The salt can only be removed from the pool when it is drained, so when you use a cover you are essentially keeping the rain water which means you will have to end up pumping it out and when you pump it out you may also lose a good amount of your salt or chemicals you use to maintain the pool.

While having a pool cover isn’t always a bad idea, you will want to sit down with a professional pool builder in Arizona to further weigh the pros and cons and discuss other options that may be available.
