The Proper Way to Test Pool Water

Care and maintenance of a swimming pool are important, and part of this means testing the water to be sure it is clean and healthy and safe for you and your family. However, you should also keep in mind that there are a few right and wrong ways of testing the pool water.

  • When testing the pool water, it is recommended that you fill your test kit from at least elbow deep in the water, rather than just on the surface. Doing so will provide you with a more accurate reading.
  • If you are experiencing higher chlorine levels than normal, then you may need to use a chlorine neutralizer. High chlorine levels can also sometimes affect the results of other pool water tests including the pH levels as well as the total alkalinity levels
  • If you do notice that you are having these chlorine issues, then the best time to test the water would be in the morning. During hot days, chlorine will begin burning off which may lead to an inaccurate test later in the day. The water is still relatively cool in the morning and allows you to test before the sun begins to heat it up
  • Pay attention to how you are storing your pool products. Always read the labels and the manufacturer’s instructions to be sure that you are properly storing them. Typically, they should be placed in a cool dark area. In the same respect, you should also check the expiration dates to be sure everything is still in superior quality condition and ready to use

If you are ever unsure about testing the water or the results you obtain from your own testing, you can always contact a Phoenix pool builder to find out if there is anything else you should be doing or any other tests you can use to check on the pool water.

Having a clean and balanced pool can ensure a safe swimming environment, reduce the risk of skin and eye irritation, and can help maintain pool components and help prevent corrosion.
